Morris County Track Club Displays Olympic Spirit

The Parsippany-based Morris County Track Club is celebrating its performance in Junior Olympics competitions held this summer.

At the 2012 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games held Aug. 2 in Humble, Texas, at Turner Stadium, 13-year-old Elorm Akasreku of Landing placed third in the sub-youth boys long jump Elorm’s personal best of 18'.09.25" bronze medal and a national #3 ranking in the AAU sub-youth category. Elorm also competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.

Parsippany kids distinguished themselves at the Texas event as well. Eight-year old R.J. Workman and his brother, 12-year old Desmond Workman of competed, respectively, in the sub-bantam boys 100-meter dash and long jump, and in the midget boys 6-pound. shot put. Neither advanced to the finals, however, both joined the ranks of MCTC 2012 Junior Olympians.

At the 2012 U.S. Track and Field National Junior Olympics Championships held at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., held July 23-29, 12-year-old Matias Pellegrino of Denville placed second in the Midget Boys Long Jump. His jump of 5.22 meters earned Matias the silver medal and the #2 national ranking in the midget level classification.

Earlier this summer, Matias won first place in the Midget Boys Long Jump at the 2012 Junior Olympics championships held in Palisades Park. At the June competition, he established a new state record jump of 5.18 meters (17 feet).
